Energy Heroine Pernille Bech Darbroudi is working on achieving Kolding Municipality's ambitious climate goals

This episode of our series introduces our first Energy Heroine:  Pernille Bech Darbroudi, energy manager at Kolding Municipality. For the past 11 years, she and the local team have been working on improving the energy consumption of the municipal buildings – both from a technical and human perspective.

Building optimisation as a holistic approach

The fourth episode features Pernille Bech Darbroudi, who works as an energy manager at the Danish municipality of Kolding. The municipality was the first to join the Ento platform in the beginning of 2021.

Back then, the team of energy managers was looking for an AI-powered solution to help them save time pondering over budgets and graphs.

Today, Ento is a valuable tool in Pernille’s daily work. “Ento’s AI can't solve all our problems, but it can certainly save us a lot of time,” she tells us. This frees up resources to not only focus on the buildings itself, but also on the users. For Kolding, it was paramount to change the mindset of the employees and make them aware of how their actions influence the energy consumption. After all, it is on them to close the energy efficient windows and turn off the LED lights

“It's not only buildings that are to blame for high energy consumption, it's also very much us humans.”
- Pernille Bech Darbroudi

With their holistic approach to building optimisation, Kolding’s team of energy managers has helped the municipality save 35% on electricity, water and heating (kr./m2) between 2006–2024. Thus, the municipality is on a good way to fulfil the stringent CO2 requirements that were anchored in their energy action plan until 2050.
